Back in 2015, Mary Barra, CEO, GM announced the company’s renewed launch plans. These were made so as to revive the loss-making company’s fortunes in India. Under these plans, GM India announced to launch two new cars.
One was Chevrolet Trailblazer, which was launched in October last year, and the second is Spin MPV. Initially the Spin MPV was supposed to be launched in India in 2016. Later the launch was delayed to 2017. Today, GM India announced that Chevrolet Spin will no longer be launched in India.
Already showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo to Indian audience, the reason given by GM India to cancel the launch plans of Spin MPV is that they want to launch products which are more in demand. MPV sales are no longer growing as compared to other segments like small car or SUV. As per the statement made by GM India, they will “shift its focus to growing segments, including SUVs.”
Initially launched in China in 2012, Chevrolet Spin is a 7/8 seater MPV which would have competed with the likes of Maruti Ertiga, Toyota Innova, etc.
Spied on multiple occasions in India, engine options on offer would have been in the form of 1.4-liter petrol generating 107 hp and 148 Nm torque via 5 speed MT along with a 1.3-liter diesel engine generating 90 hp and 200 Nm.
Sadly, this is going to happen anymore. Instead, GM India has promised to launch at least five new cars in the next 24 months. These will be in the form of new Cruze, new Trailblazer, new Beat, New Beat Activ and New Essentia.
