Datsun Redi-Go 1 Liter Review – Small Car with More Power
Datsun’s new redi GO 1.0 liter compact hatchback will be launched in India today. We test drove the car in Goa recently, and here is our review.
Based on the existing Redi-Go 800 cc variant, the new 1 liter variant of Redi-Go will be offered in – T(O) and S trim levels. It will compete with cars like Renault Kwid 1 liter and Maruti Alto K10. To projects its sporty image, Datsun has roped in Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik as brand ambassador.
Datsun redi-GO 1.0 liter, which continues to boast of an angular, tall boy design, as seen on the 800cc variant, is sporty in stance and style. Based on the Renault Nissan CMF modular platform, its exterior is strikingly similar to the 800cc version with added body graphics and badging.
The redi GO 1.0 liter hatchback will be seen with 9 new features and 3 new color options. It will sport a chrome finished hexagonal grille, chiseled bumpers, boomerang shaped tail lights, headlamps with silver inserts, LED DRLs and ORVMs on both driver and passenger sides.
1.0 liter redi GO measures 3,429mm in length, 1,560mm in width and 1,541mm in height. It sits on a wheelbase measuring 2,348mm while ground clearance is at 185mm and boot space at 222 liters. New exterior colors will add to its appeal while the redi GO 1.0 liter seeks to attract the attention of a younger segment of buyers in the country.
Datsun redi GO 1.0 liter though compact in dimensions is considerably spacious where its cabin is concerned – offering comfort to occupants where head, shoulder and leg room is concerned. Higher in its stance, as compared to other compact and budget hatchbacks in its category allows for better frontal and side visibility while boot space is also spacious for a decent amount of luggage.
New Redi-Go 1 liter comes with all black interiors with red and black seat covers. The Datsun redi GO rear seat is comfortable for three passengers to be seated comfortably. The high mounting of the rear seat give better under thigh support while the upright back rests also offers better comfort.
In terms of features, the new 1.0 liter hatchback gets air conditioning, music system with AUX and USB connectivity, power steering and driver side airbag. To add to its sporty appeal, rectangular central air vent and blue instrument panel is added as a part of its updates. 2 DIN audio system, USB and AUX connectivity, a CD player and two speakers are also a part of the infotainment features offered on the 1.0 liter redi GO.
Sufficient storage spaces are seen throughout its interior. There is space on the lower half of the dash while there is a large central storage as well. Door pockets are present, but they are enough to keep files / folders, and not water bottles.
The central console receives addition of new door lock/unlock button and remote keyless entry. The top end S variant gets features such as manual air conditioning, power steering, front power windows, daytime running lights and driver’s airbag. The side profile boasts of the same muscular theme while the hatchback sits on 13” wheels fitted with 155/80 R13 Ceat tyres. This is unlike the JK tyre seen on the 800cc variant.
Engine and Mileage
Datsun redi GO 1.0 liter, is based on the same underpinnings as the Kwid and uses the same 1.0 liter petrol engine as seen on the hatchback. This 1.0 liter 3 cylinder petrol engine offers 67 bhp power and 91 Nm torque while being mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox.
This engine has been designed and developed by the company’s French partners, Renault engineers at Datsun promising better power delivery. It is called i-SAT – Intelligent Spark Automated Technology resulting in better performance while fuel efficiency stands at 22.5 kmpl, which is an improvement as compared to the 22.04 kmpl offered on the Kwid 1.0 liter. In comparison, the redi Go 800cc counterpart receives a 799cc, three cylinder, DOHC engine offering 53.2 bhp power and 72 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox.
In terms of safety, the redi Go receives new central locking button on its central console, remote locking for all four doors and driver side airbags. With added power, driving around town is easier while the compact size makes for easy overtaking especially on the highway.
The addition of power has resulted in a better performance. Inside the city, taking off from standstill is done much more efficiently. Thanks to small size, you are able to maneuver your way out through the tightest of spots, and easily find parking.
Power delivery is also smoother, specially at lower revs unlike that experienced on its 800cc counterpart where jerks are predominant at lower engine speeds. The steering wheel is electronic. This has made steering very light, but at the same time, it does not deliver any feedback to the driver. Triple digit cruising speed on the highway is easily achieved.
Suspension system on the 1.0 liter redi Go remains unchanged. This hatchback sports McPherson strut with lower transverse link and twin tube hydraulic shock absorbers. It also gets twist beam with coil springs, twin hydraulic telescopic shock absorbers positioned on front and rear axles. Ride quality is a bit on the stiffer side.
Datsun redi GO 1.0 liter is designed to attract the younger segment of buyers in India and is hence fashioned with bold styling and more contemporary features. Dubbed as an ’urban crossover’, the redi Go gets smart exteriors, good interior space and high level of fuel efficiency. Compared to the 800 cc variant, the 1-liter variant makes more sense for those who are always in the need of additional power.
