Even as Renault India is struggling to keep pace with the demand for the Kwid, Datsun its gearing up to launch its own product based of the same CMF-A platform. The test mules of the Datsun redi-Go production model have already started testing in and around Chennai. The clearest yet spyshots have emerged, showing the car’s front fascia for the first time.
Despite the camouflage, once can easily make out that the final product is not very far off from the concept which was showcased at the previous Auto Expo. We expect the bumpers, headlamps, taillights, wing mirrors and wheels to be slightly watered down but the primary design elements have been retained.
The front fascia’s styling is centered around the signature hexagonal grille which adopts black honeycomb meshing instead of chrome (could be a part of accessories). Like its Renault counterpart, the redi-Go goes has a tall stance. Salient design features include peeled back headlamps, boomerang-shaped taillights, triangular base for the C-pillar and possible silver skid plate. As expected, the car features a single wiper and skinny tyres to keep costs at bay.
Powering the Datsun redi-Go production model is the same 800 cc three-cylinder petrol engine which serves the Renault Kwid. Power and torque figures stand at 54 PS and 72 Nm respectively. A 5-speed manual gearbox drives the front wheels.
Datsun would price the redi-Go almost at par with the Renault Kwid. The third model from Nissan’s budget brand carries a heavy responsibility of getting the ailing sales up and running.
