This accident occurred at Kasturba Gandhi Marg in Central Delhi on Saturday night. Two youth were in a Mercedes-Benz C-Class with 19 year old Dhruv Bagla at the wheel while his 20 year old friend Karan Jain was in the passenger seat.
The two youngsters were returning from Connaught Place and had consumed alcohol. They tried to avoid a traffic check post and when they were signaled to stop at the Police Picket at KG Marg, they slowed down but then sped away. They jumped a red light but lost control of the vehicle and rammed into a Maruti Swift coming from the opposite side of the road.
The Mercedes C Class then climbed onto a side pavement and hit a signpost before coming to a stop. Bagla has been arrested but granted bail even as medical tests conducted on him revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
The occupants of the C Class suffered no injuries as airbags deployed in the C Class while the driver of the Swift, who is employed by Ajay Agarwal, former Director General of Tihar Jail, received serious injuries. He was admitted in hospital and is said to be in the ICU.
High speed driving, driving in drunk condition, and similar cases on Indian roads is something to be tackled with extreme caution. Public roads are not for over speeding. Drivers are expected to limit speeds and take into account oncoming traffic, pedestrians and stray cattle, while breaking traffic signals and overtaking in a wrong manner are also to be avoided as it could cost a limb or life.
