Filming car TVC / stunts without an actual car – This is how they do it (Video)

Filming car TVC or a high octane chase sequence is not gonna be the same anymore. Meet The Mill’s Blackbird rig which is designed in such a way to take the form of any car during post production.

The Mill is a studio which has shot TVCs for top global OEMs like Jaguar, BMW, Audi, Toyota, Honda, Dodge, Qoros, etc. Here is how they aim to redefine car adverts:

The Blackbird is a shape shifting, fully adjustable electric rig which can be made to mimic the dynamic capabilities of the car whose’s advert or chase sequence is being shot. The shooting rig has been developed by The Mill in association with JemFX, Performance Filmworks, and Keslow.

The rig was built in the same hangar where the legendary Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird supersonic (Mach 3+) reconnaissance aircraft was built. Hence its shares the Blackbird name. Normally, the car adverts and chase sequences use a lot of dummy cars, mules, and extensive CGI work.

The Blackbird rig can adopt the form of any car during post processing.

The challenges faced while shooting a stunt sequence involving a car is the availability of the car and feasibility of the stunt at the given environment. By using the Blackbird rig, a lot of time and cost could be saved.
