GM India made a couple of big announcements today pertaining to the company’s future launch plans. First they announced that Spin MPV will not be launched in India.
Launch of Spin MPV was confirmed by Mary Barra, CEO, GM last year. The new development is due to the change in customer demands, which no longer prefer larger cars. Instead, more and more customers are opting for compact cars, especially SUVs.
In light of this shifting pattern of car buyers in India, GM today announced to cancel the launch of Spin MPV and focus towards launching cars which are more in demand. Under this new update, GM India promised to launch five new cars within the next 24 months.
These five new cars for India are – New Beat hatchback, Beat Activ Crossover, Essentia compact sedan, New Cruze sedan and New Trailblazer SUV. GM India did not reveal in which order these cars will be launched, but they did say all will be on saly by June 2018.
New Beat is already on sale in certain countries around the globe. India-spec version of new Beat will be different than the one sold in Europe and South Korea. India-spec new Beat will be based on the existing Beat’s platform. It will be offered in a choice of petrol and diesel engine options. Petrol 1.0 liter and diesel 1.0 liter. Both mated to a five-speed MT.
Same platform will be used to build the Beat Activ and Essentia sedan, both of which made global debut at the 2016 Auto Expo. Engine option too are expected to be same as that of Beat hatchback.
