Gujarat Police take delivery of custom Harley Davidson Street 750 (Update)

UPDATE 27th May 2015: Today, the Harley Davidson outlet in Ahemdabad, Nine Bridges, officially handed over the custom Harley Davidson Street 750 motorcycles.

What’s a bummer here is that these bikes will be used mostly for escorting VIPs and only a little bit for chasing down runaways Avenger or Terminator style.

29th Dec 2014: The Indian Motorcycle of the Year 2015 (IMOTY) is at the top of the list of motorcycles Gujarat police force is about to receive. The technical committee of Gujarat police has submitted a report to the office of Director General of Police, suggesting purchase of 20 imported motorcycles for Gujarat Police.

One of the senior police officials in Gandhinagar revealed that out of the 20 superbikes, 7 are Harley Davidson motorcycles between 750 cc and 1000 cc (HD Street 750 and SuperLow). These HD bikes are expected to be procured before the Vibrant Gujarat Summit in January 2015.

Sources in the Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar mentioned that technical committee had shortlisted four motorcycle brands – Harley Davidson, BMW, Triumph and Hyosung. Given the price range of BMW it was obviously scored off. For the next lot of purchase, bikes from the South Korean and British companies can be expected. In case of Hyosung it could be the Aquila 250 cruiser and from Triumph Bonneville classic cruiser.

More bikes would have been ordered by the Gujarat police, but according to a police source, the two other companies said they wouldn’t be able to deliver the bikes in time before Vibrant Gujarat Summit, as repainting and installing accessories like siren, warning lamp and wireless communicator would take more time.

A senior police official stated that Trainers from the respective motorcycle companies will be arranged to coach the riders in Gujarat police force, as they may or may not have experience in riding heavier and much powerful bikes.

Over a hundred 220cc bikes (Bajaj Pulsar 220) were procured by Gujarat police in 2013 for creating the Hawk squad to chase fleeing criminals. But due to incompetency, there were incidents resulted by loss of control at high speeds.
