As slowdown continues in the Indian auto sector, most two-wheeler companies have registered negative growth in July 2019. India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer Hero MotoCorp’s sales have fallen -22.9% in July 2019. In July 2018, sales stood at 6,63,283 units, which came down to 5,11,374 units in July 2019. Hero has also lost market share, down from 36.51% in July 2018 to 33.83% in July 2019.
In scooters, Hero Duet has registered negative growth of -82%. Sales are down from a high of 16,710 units in July 2018 to just 2,975 units in July 2019. However, this loss in sales can be attributed to Destini 125, the bigger sibling of Duet launched in October last year. Destini 125 was launched to take on rival Honda Activa 125 and it seems to be doing good, registering sales of 11,158 units in July 2019.
Hero Pleasure is the other scooter that’s doing well, with YoY sales growth of 31% in July 2019. Another Activa rival is Hero Maestro, which has lost almost half its sales. In July last year, Maestro sales were 22,879 units, which came down to 11,922 units in July 2019.
Talking about motorcycles, Hero’s top selling Splendor has registered negative growth of -31.42%, down from 2,60,865 units in July 2018 to 1,78,907 units in July 2019. Hero’s second bestselling bike HF Deluxe has lost 8% sales, down from 1,83,694 units to 1,69,632 units.
Another popular Hero motorcycle that has registered negative growth is Passion. The bike has lost more than half of its sales, down from 88,354 units in July 2018 to 43,439 units in July 2019. Other Hero bikes that have registered negative growth include HF Dawn (-100%), Achiever (-100%), Karizma (-100%), and Glamour (-5%).
Hero motorcycles that have registered positive YoY growth in July 2019 include Xtreme 200R (55%) and Xtreme (35%). Hero MotoCorp’s July numbers may not be impressive, but it continues to dominate the motorcycle segment. In the list of bestselling bikes in July 2019, Hero motorcycles occupy three of the top five slots. Hero motorcycles featured in July top 10 list include Splendor, HF Deluxe, Glamour, and Passion.
