Honda doubts Hero Splendor iSmart fuel efficiency claim of 102.5 kmpl
In April, Hero laid claims that iCAT – International Centre for Automotive Technology had certified their Splendor iSmart model confirming mileage of 102.50kmpl. This claim has been turned down by Japanese automaker Honda, stating that this is not only misleading but way off the mark from actual figures.
Following the launch of Bajaj Platina ES 2015 bike claiming to be world’s most fuel efficient bike claiming mileage of 96.9 kmpl, Hero MotoCorp introduced the Hero Splendor iSmart striking down this claim and projecting their bike to have fuel efficiency of 102.5 kmpl under test conditions
Honda R&D Center India (HRID) President & CEO Keiji Kasa has drawn attention to the fact that the base engine is developed by Honda and the claimed mileage cannot be maintained on sustained basis even in controlled environment. Hero MotoCorp in their defence state that they have applied various techniques to make this mileage possible.
These include a host of techniques, reduction of kerb weight and enhancement and optimization of engine. The company has introduced burn technology along with Idle Start Stop System allowing the engine to idle and start at the press of the clutch. This brings about great improvements in fuel efficiency. These explanations have failed to impress Honda who continue to refute these claims.
Hero further states to PTI, that the mileage figures were achieved under the supervision of iCAT, an agency which is authorized by the Government of India. Questioning the credibility of iSmart’s mileage is questioning the regulations and standards set by the government, and in turn, the law itself of our country, added Hero MotoCorp.
