The interesting IED Scilla, a concept conceived by Transportation Design students of Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) Turin with support from Pininfarina and Quattroroute, is on display at the ongoing 2017 Geneva Motor Show. Named after a sea monster from Greek mythology (there is also a South Italian town by the same name), Scilla’s design is inspired by the veil.

The futuristic automobile concept is all about rediscovering the lightness, both in life and driving experience. The smooth flowing surfaces of Scilla make up for a very complex monolithic shape that would feel very much at home in a space exploration sci-fi flick set in the future.

The semi-autonomous concept adopts an unconventional 1+1 seating configuration and features a retractable steering wheel (or is it more of a joystick?) which incorporates 3D displays. Power comes from brushless electric motors which are mounted on the rear wheel hubs. The battery pack resides behind the passenger compartment.

In terms of numbers, IED Scilla is 4,550 mm long, 1,955 mm wide and 1,100 mm tall. No powertrain specifications have been discussed.

The 16-member team that created Scilla concept is constituted by shortlisted students whose individual proposals best met the requirements for exterior and interior designs. The students involved are Sandeep Dilip Sutar (India), Daniel Antony James Lourdusamy (India), Abhijeet Kumar (India), Allwyn Pushparaj Santha Suthan James (India), Jayesh Ajay Naphade (India), Ramón Aguirre Dávalos (Mexico), Yusuf Atlamaz (Turkey), Ana María Bravo Sanabria (Colombia), Giovanni Bulgarelli (Italy), Ko-Han Hsu (Taiwan), Kaihang Huang (China), José Rogelio Quesada Campos (Costa Rica), Igor Shenderey (Russia), Jaehyun Shin (South Korea), Yanyi Song (China), and Daniel Gilberto Teruel Valdenea (Mexico). The team worked under Alessandro Cipolli, co-ordinator, Master in Transportation Design, IED Turin.
