Indian Railways starts trial run of coaches with glass ceilings and bigger windows

State of the art coaches with glass ceilings and world class amenities along with luxurious interiors and added leg room are being tested by Indian Railways. These exclusive coaches were developed by Integral Coach Factory at Chennai along with IRCTC and Research Design and Standards Organization. Each coach is being built at a cost of INR 4 crores.

Flagged off on a trial run between Visakhapatnam and Araku, these new Vistadome CoachesĀ are seen with glass roof, LED lights, GPS based information system and rotating seats. The coaches were flagged off by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Sunday in Vishakapatnam where he also laid the foundation Mechanized Laundry under BOOT Model.

Photos of the new Vistadome Coaches were revealed in a series of tweets where they were seen with a glass roof allowing commuters to take in the scenic beauty and valley views along the route. This glass roof comes in with electronically controlled opalescence which can be made transparent to see exteriors and made opaque again to shut off intense light when necessary. The coaches also get an observation lounge and infotainment system while to make these coaches easily accessible for differently abled commuters, doors are wide and get auto sliding facilities.

As per statement revealed, these coaches are being built at a cost of INR 4 crores for four coaches built for the trial run. Two of these coaches will run across the Visakhapatnam and Araku route and two will be sent to Jammu and Kashmir. The two coaches will be attached to the Kothavalasa- Kirandole passenger train.

Services will be open to the public from Wednesday and bookings can be done online by paying around INR 650 per ticket. The train will leave Vishakapatnam at 7.15 am daily and will start back from Araku at 4.00 pm on its return journey. Prabhu stated that this was the start of many such surprises as he plans to introduce Vistadome services in scenic north eastern states to promote tourism.

The coaches will have rotating chairs and will offer passengers an aeriel view of the landscape outside. On board infotainment system offering access to movies, TV shows, news and games will also be on offer. These new glass top railway coaches is a part of the Government’s plan to revamp the transport system is the country while these coaches would also help in promoting tourism and attract tourists both from within the country and abroad.
