Fiat India had first promised to launch the Jeep brand in India more than two years ago, in 2013. They had even decided on the product line-up and launch plans. But, due to pricing related issues, and a no-go from the headquarters, launch of Jeep in India was delayed.
Earlier this year, Fiat India confirmed that Jeep will be launched in 2015. Today, they announced the launch of their website and social media channels. Jeep India will showcase their entire line-up at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo in February next year. Speaking about the cars they will launch here, it has been confirmed that it will include Wrangler Unlimited and Grand Cherokee. Both these will be sold and serviced at exclusive Jeep India outlets which will open by mid 2016. Jeep outlets will first be in opened in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune and Ahmedabad in phase-wise manner.
Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for India will only be offered with a diesel engine option. This will be in the form of 2.8 liter four cylinder engine generating 197 hp power and 460 Nm torque at 1,800 rpm. Mated to an automatic five speed gearbox, price of Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is expected to be in the region of INR 40 lakh.
On the other hand, Jeep Grand Cherokee, which will only be available in Summit trim, will be powered by a 3.0 liter turbocharged diesel V6. This engine generates max power of 237 hp and a peak torque of 550 Nm. Mated to an 8 speed ZF autobox, price of Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit in India is expected to around INR 65-70 lakh.
Apart from this, Fiat India also has plans to launch Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. This will be th top of the line offering from Jeep in the country. Powered by an 6.4 liter V8 engine, generating max power of 574 hp and peak torque of 637 Nm, it will be mated to an 8 speed ZF transmission. Price is estimated to be in the range of INR 1.2 crore.
All three models will be sold as CBU. The first made in India Jeep variant is planned for a 2017 launch. This will be in the form of a compact SUV, which will compete with the likes of Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner.
