Jeep testing small SUV under Renegade skin – Spy Shots

A few weeks back, it was reported that Jeep India is working on a sub INR 10 lakh SUV, which will rival the likes of Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster.

An entry level mini SUV which is presently known as the Jeep Junior is being readied by FCA for a world premiere towards the end of 2017. This new model, just like the recently unveiled Jeep Compass, will be built at the automaker’s Betim plant, as well as the Pune plant.

FCA has already specified the cost targets to its vendors and the design of the Junior has already been finalized. People who have had the chance to look at the final design reportedly described the car as ‘beautiful’.

Testing too has commenced, but it is under the skin of Renegade. Above are some of the spy shots which were clicked by a reader when the car was on test in the Pune city. Once launched, this new compact Jeep will sit under the Renegade and will become the most affordable Jeep.

Likely to be based on the same platform as the next-gen Punto (codenamed X6H), the Jeep Junior would be smaller than the already compact Renegade crossover. Keeping up with the American SUV specialist’s tradition, we expect the Junior to adopt a boxy styling. The interiors would be offering enough space to accommodate at least 4 passengers.

For the Brazilian market, the Jeep Junior is expected to be powered by a 1.8-litre E.torQ flex fuel engine which dishes out 138 PS and 189 Nm of torque. A new 1.3-litre flex-fuel engine is also reported to be under development.

Jeep has been working on to revamp its global portfolio for the last few years. The Renegade ventured into a new segment, the new Jeep Compass is all set to become a single product replacement for the Compass and Liberty and the Jeep Junior would be aiming to ride on the global crossover frenzy.
