MPV sales chart for June 2019 can be an indicator of the on-going slowdown in the auto industry, as most products have registered negative growth. However, overall MUV segment growth is under 5% in June 2019, as compared to sales numbers in June 2018. This is largely because of addition of Mahindra Marazzo and high growth registered by Maruti Suzuki Ertiga.
With sales of 7,567 units in June 19, Ertiga has registered an impressive 76% growth. In June 2018, Ertiga had sold 4,311 units. Ertiga sales were a bit slow last year, but it picked up pace after second-generation Ertiga was launched in November 2018. Since February 2019, Ertiga sales have been consistently more than 7k-8k units.
Second-generation Ertiga utilizes the Heartect platform, which ensures superior handling and driving dynamics. In May, Ertiga Tour M was launched, which has been especially designed for taxi fleet segment. Next on the cards is Ertiga Sport, which will be a premium variant and the costliest Ertiga in India.
The other achiever in June is Mahindra Marazzo with sales of 1,206 units. Marazzo was launched in September 2018 and it has registered consistent sales since then. But since the past two months, Marazzo sales are on a decline. Dealers are offering cash discounts of up to Rs 1 lakh on select Marazzo variants. In April this year, Marazzo achieved the significant production milestone of 25k units. Marazzo comes with several advanced features and has received 4-star safety rating.
Another car in the list is Mahindra Bolero with sales of 5,118 units in June 2019. However, this is a negative growth of -18%, as sales in June 2018 were 6,229 units. Mahindra recently updated the Bolero range with new safety features, as mandated for passenger vehicles. However, Bolero range still has to comply with other requirements such as BS-VI emission norms, crash test norms and pedestrian safety norms.
Next is Toyota Innova Crysta with sales of 4,814 units in June 2019. This translates into negative growth of -25% in comparison to June 2018 when sales were 6,426 units. Crysta is one of the bestselling Toyota cars in India, registering consistent sales of 6k-8k units. The MPV recently received interior updates and its price was increased in the range of Rs 10k-24k.
The MPV with maximum losses is Tata Sumo, with sales hitting zero units in June 2019. Other MPVs with big losses in June 2019 include Renault Lodgy (-48%), and Datsun Go+ (-38%). Maruti Eeco in the VAN segment continues to post growth as rival Omni has been discontinued.
