The NGT diesel ban which was implemented in Delhi in January 2016 has been a spanner in the works for the fast growing JLR India. In an attempt to offset the adverse effect the diesel ban is having on its business, the company has launched the Land Rover Discovery Sport petrol variant.
The new variant is priced at INR 56.5 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). The Tata-owned British automaker vows to adapt to the changing market conditions.
Speaking about the launch, Rohit Suri, president, JLR India, revealed that the Discovery Sport petrol was not originally planned for India this early. The petrol variant was supposed to be launched at a later stage but the diesel ban forced the automaker to expedite it.
It’s to be noted that all of JLR India’s diesel models are affected by the ban which appears to be extended to several other cities in India. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder Si4 petrol engine is tuned to deliver an impressive 240 PS and 340 Nm of torque. The motor is mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission and comes with a standard 4WD system.
Mr. Suri stated that the company is in the process of introducing more petrol models in India to keep its growth momentum intact and broaden the appeal.
