Land Rover Discovery Sport is set to be launched in India on September 2, which is when the official price will be revealed. But, before that, as per a leaked document, price of the new SUV will start from INR 46.3 lakhs (ex-showroom, Pune), while top end variant will cost Rs 54.2 lakhs. This makes the base version roughly INR 2.5 lakhs cheaper than the locally assembled Evoque. JLR India has started taking orders for the Discovery Sport.
If the leaked price is correct, the new Discovery Sport will be the most affordable Land Rover in the country. It will rival the likes of Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes ML Class (GLE) and Volvo XC60. CKD assembly of the Freelander 2 replacement has already commenced at JLR India’s plant near Pune.
Based on the aluminium extensive iQ architecture, Discovery Sport for India will be offered with a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel motor which was replaced by the new 2.0-litre Ingenium motor in Euro6 markets. The older oil burner is available in two states of tune – 150 PS and 180 PS. A 9-speed automatic transmission drives either the rear or all the four wheels.
The luxury SUV is equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a comprehensive suite of driver assistance systems including park assist which steers automatically, terrain response system, full fledged safety features, sliding second row and an optional third row with 5+2 seating configuration.
JLR India has been registering impressive growth rate in the last few years, resulting in steady increase in the number of locally assembled models (Land Rover Evoque, Discovery Sport, Jaguar XF and XJ). Discovery Sport and upcoming Jaguar XE are set to boost the growth further in the coming years.
