The Baleno for India doesn’t offer side airbags even as an optional extra.

The Maruti Baleno (called as Suzuki Baleno outside India) has been awarded 3-star rating in the Euro-NCAP crash tests for the lower variants which are not equipped with the radar braking system. The fully loaded variant with the said feature managed to receive 4-star rating.

The hatchback which is made in India for global consumption is found to have a stable structure under frontal off-set collision test, thus offering good adult and child occupant protection in most cases. However, in its test report, Euro-NCAP noted that:

In the more severe side pole impact test, dummy readings of lateral rib compression indicated weak chest protection and the head protection was downgraded to adequate as a result of the incorrect (side) airbag deployment.

The low-end Euro-spec Baleno which was awarded 3-star rating was equipped with standard safety features such as dual front airbag, side airbags, seat belt pre-tensioner and load limiter, seat-belt reminder and ABS with EBD. In terms of percentage, the hatchback scored 80% in adult occupant protection category, 73% in child occupant protection, 65% in pedestrian protection and 43% in safety assistance systems.

The testing agency says that incorrect deployment of side airbags under pole impact test reduced the safety scores a bit.
