Maruti Brezza diesel to discontinue – To get 1.5 L petrol instead

Brezza with aftermarket alloys.

Maruti Brezza is only offered with a diesel engine option ever since launch. This is soon set change, as it will receive a new 1.5 liter petrol engine. This is the same engine that made its debut on the Ciaz last year. This engine also powers the new Ertiga.

With the new 1.5 liter petrol engine, Maruti Brezza will compete with the petrol variants of rivals like Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV300. This new 1.5 liter petrol engine has been built in-house by Maruti Suzuki India. It is a 4 cylinder mill, which generates 103 PS power and 138 Nm torque. Transmission options on offer are 5 MT and 4 AT.

Speaking about rivals, Ford EcoSport is powered by a 1.5 liter petrol engine offering 123 hp power and 150 Nm torque. Tata Nexon is powered by a 1.2 liter turbo petrol engine offering 110 hp power and 170 Nm torque.

Mahindra XUV300 gets a 1.2 liter turbo petrol engine offering 110 hp power and 200 Nm torque. Maruti Brezza will also have to contend with the soon to be launched Hyundai Venue which gets its power via a 1.0 liter turbo petrol engine offering 100 hp power and 172 Nm torque. Venue is also offered with 1.2 liter engine generating 83 PS.

In addition to the 1.5 liter petrol engine, Maruti is also expected to power the Brezza with state of the art 1.2 liter DualJet petrol hybrid motor with SHVS tech. This engine option was recently launched on board the Baleno. It delivers 90 hp and 113 Nm via 5 speed MT.

There are also reports that Maruti Brezza will be offered with a fully electric powertrain in 2022, thanks to help from Toyota. It will rival the XUV300 electric, which is set for debut in 2020. Maruti is going to stop selling diesel cars from April 2020. Diesel cars accounted for 23% of Maruti’s total sales in 2018. In order to compensate for the loss of diesel car sales, Maruti will launch more variants of petrol and CNG with their cars.

But before Maruti discontinues the diesel engines, they will replace the current 1.3 liter Brezza with 1.5 liter diesel engine, which was recently launched in Ciaz and Ertiga. It is more powerful than current diesel engine. It delivers 95 PS and 225 Nm. This engine too will get discontinued by April 2020.
