Detailed sales report of Maruti Ciaz, Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, Volkswagen Vento, Toyota Yaris for the year 2019.
There is no getting away from the fact that the Indian car market faced one of its worst slowdowns in 2019. Every automaker in the country reported lower sales and the sedan segment was among the worst sufferers.
Maruti Suzuki Ciaz continues to be the highest selling sedan in the C2 segment. This despite the faced that in 2019, sales dipped to 29,706 units from a high of 50,759 units sold in 2018. Sales of the Ciaz have been on a steady decline since March 2019. What started the year with 2,934 units sold, increased to 3,084 units in February 2019 and thereon to 3,672 units in March 2019. From then on sales have been gradually declining to 1,448 units in November 2019 and to 1,786 units in December 2019.

Honda cars have also posted declining sales of City, in the past year by 36 percent. The Honda City, which is an important model in the company lineup, noted total sales of 28,696 units in the past year. Sales, which started off at 4,855 units in January 2019 dipped over the following months to 1,004 units in December 2019.
It was the same story with the Hyundai Verna of which total sales stood at 28,190 units in the past calendar year. Here too sales were at a high of 3,216 units in January and increased to 3,299 units in February but then onwards declined to a low of 1,295 units in December 2019.
Where the Skoda Rapid is concerned, sales which never increased past the 1,000 unit mark in a month for the first 11 months, suddenly surged to 1,359 units in December 2019 – outselling the Hyundai Verna and Honda City in that month. This took total sales of Rapid in the past calendar year to 9,751 units. VW Vento sales for the past year stood at 5,606 units.
Sales of the Toyota Yaris put this C segment sedan at the bottom of the list of its competitors. Sales in the past year stood at 4,562 units with sales in July at just 51 units and sales in December 2019 at 76 units. Ahead of the April 2020 deadline, the company has already introduced the BS6 compliant version of the Yaris. To boost sales, Toyota is also contemplating launch of Yaris CNG option.
Total sales of the above mentioned cars in the C Segment sedans in the past year stood at 1,06,51 units. Monthly sales total, which stood at 12,757 units in January 2019 has dipped to 5,989 units in Dec 2019. This shows that demand for sedans in the C segment are on a steady decline.
