The third generation WagonR, launched on January 23, 2019, is bigger, more spacious and more powerful than its predecessor. It is based on a the Heartect platform, which has increased dimensions and reduced weight, as compared to its older counterpart.
Maruti WagonR has been one of the best selling cars in its category. First launched in India in 1999, the WagonR has received a couple of updates over the years. It continued through all these changes to retain its tall boy design philosophy, maximizing cabin space while retaining its compact dimensions. Just prior to the 2019 WagonR being launched, sales of the WagonR touched 2.2 million units in the country.
In spite of the 2019 WagonR launched, there are many dealers across India, who have unsold stock of old 2018 model. These are new cars, but are yet to find buyers. But with the new WagonR launched, dealers are offering attractive discounts and benefits up to Rs 1 lakhs on the 2018 model.
There is a marginal price hike between the older Maruti Suzuki WagonR and the new gen model. The new WagonR is now priced at Rs.4,000 higher than its older counterpart starting with a price tag of Rs.4.19 lakhs for its base L variant going up to Rs.5.69 lakhs for the top end variant which is Rs.34,000 more than the outgoing model. But with old WagonR being sold at discount, difference between prices is even wider.
As compared to that seen on its earlier counterpart, the new Maruti Suzuki WagonR gets two engine options. These include a 1.0 liter, 3 cylinder petrol engine that also powered the older WagonR while a new 1.2 liter, 4 cylinder K-Series petrol engine has been added.
The 1.0 liter petrol engine offers 68 PS power and 9 Nm torque while the new 1.2 liter petrol engine fives out 83 PS power and 113 Nm torque mated to a 5 speed manual gearbox and AMT. This engine only powers the top end V and Z variants while the 1.0 liter petrol powers the L and V variants.
Despite the fact that the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R falls in the budget segment, the top spec variants get a host of features among which are climate control, multi function steering wheel, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment unit with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, steering mounted controls and tilt telescopic adjustable steering wheel. In terms of safety, it is seen with keyless entry, parking sensors with camera, dual airbags, ABS and EBD and ISOFIX child seat mounts.
