Baralacha la

Bara-Lacha means summit and consists of cross roads from Spiti, Ladakh, Zanskar and Lahaul. It is at a height of 4,890 meters across the Leh Manali Highway. It is a tough and treacherous roadway on which even experienced driver’s fear to travel.

They have to face lack of oxygen, steep gradients, uneven terrain, narrow roads barely a few feet in breath and yet these driver manage to drive their trucks and buses to and from the region practically on a daily basis.

Kunzum La

At an elevation of 4,590 meters above sea level, this location is among some of the most difficult to navigate. Kunzum La is the gateway to Spiti Valley via Kullu Valey and Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh. HRTC conducts bus services to and from this location and a bus ride from Manali to Kunzum takes around 8-10 hours on an average. The road is covered with snow and has deep furrows and dense forests while during certain times of the year the road is also flooded with water coming down from melting snow, thus making the road even more difficult and dangerous.
