New generation Mahindra Scorpio (Z101) to target global markets
The new model will also spawn a pickup version which is likely to lead Mahindra's charge in the US markets.
Next gen Mahindra Scorpio (codenamed Z101) is currently being developed at the automaker’s North American Technical Center. According to ET, the fourth generation of the popular Indian SUV would be ready by 2020 and it would be engineered to suit the developed global markets.
It’s being reported that the next gen Scorpio will be based on an improved version of the current gen model’s architecture. It will incorporate features and design that are suitable for developed markets like the US and Europe.
In addition to the passenger carrying version, the upcoming Scorpio will also spawn a light pickup truck. The pickup would be crucial to make inroads in the North American market. The development of the new Scorpio is already underway and it is the second product to be developed by Mahindra’s North American Technical Center (the first one is the U321 – Innova-rivaling MPV – that is set to launch in a year’s time).
ET also reports that next gen Mahindra Scorpio will be one of the first models to sport the brand’s new design language. While the concept design is said to be handled by the Michigan R&D center, Mahindra Research Valley (MRV) in Chennai will be responsible for subsequent engineering and integration of the product.
Mahindra Scorpio has been witnessing increasing pressure from crossovers like Hyundai Creta and Renault Duster. The SUV has been clocking an average monthly sales of around 3,000 units in an increasingly competitive environment. The next gen model would be given the responsibility of increasing the sales figure significantly.
