The Mercedes-AMG GT is called as the ‘baby SLS’ for a reason – it is not a replacement for the gull-winged supercar. The GT is primarily conceived to take a stab at the legendary Porsche 911 rather than being a flagship production Mercedes. Not that it’s not good enough but Mercedes-AMG has the means, resources and skills to create a much more mental high-performance road legal supercar.
Autoblog reports that the Affalterbach-based performance division is working on a new halo car to slot above the GT. The SLS’s spiritual successor is likely to derive its power from a new V12 AMG powerplant. The IC engine is reported to be assisted by a hybrid system consisting of an electric motor and a battery which could make the new Mercedes-AMG supercar the most powerful production model ever created in the company’s illustrious history. The hybrid system would also help the car comply with the stringent regulatory norms.
No further details are available as of now but one could expect the new halo Merc to adopt a meaner and sportier character than the GT. We hope to see active aerodynamic body elements that were previewed by the fantastic IAA concept.
The new Mercedes-AMG supercar is still some time away from seeing the light of day. Meanwhile, the performance division would be coming up with variants of the AMG-GT including a Black Edition.
