Already launched in the US and Europe, the new generation Mercedes Benz E Class was launched in India earlier this year in Feb. At that time, the company had launched the E200 and E350d variants. Today, the company announced the launch of E220d variant.
Price of the E220d diesel variant starts from INR 57.14 lakh, that of E200 petrol variant starts from INR 56.9 lakh and that of the diesel E350d variant starts from 70.15 lakh ex-showroom, Delhi.
The new gen E Class (standard) measures 4,923 mm in length (43 mm longer than older gen) and has a wheelbase of 2,939 mm (65 mm longer than older gen). Thanks to aerodynamic surfaces, the luxury sedan has an impressive drag coefficient of just 0.23 Cd. And if you thought that this was long enough for India. Well, you are mistaken.
Offered only in LWB trim (long wheelbase), the new E Class is the first ever car LWB car to be on sale in in India. It is also the first time in the world that a E Class LWB in RHD format has been launched. The LWB variant is stretched by 140 mm as compared to the regular E Class. 2017 Mercedes E Class LWB sedan has a wheelbase of 3,079mm while the overall length is stretched to 5,063mm.
Speaking about design changes, Mercedes Benz has not just extended rear doors and roofline to give it an elongated stance but has integrated a triangular window into C Pillars. This offers rear passengers added 134mm legroom while rear seats are pushed back offering better ingress and egress.
The 2017 E Class is packed up its gills with latest safety and comfort features. Apart from the optional fully digital instrument console which is derived from the S Class, the saloon offers a 12.3-inch centre console infotainment display, LED headlights, LED ambient lighting with 64 color options, touch sensitive media buttons on steering wheel, Burmester sound system, two optional suspension systems (DIRECT CONTROL with selective damping and AIR BODY CONTROL), Attention Assist, Drive Pilot (adaptive cruise control up to 210 kmph), Active Brake Assist with cross-traffic function, Evasive Steering Assist, Remote Parking Pilot, Car-to-X communication, Pre-Safe, and and many more.
Engine options on offer are 2.0 liter petrol, all new 2.0 liter diesel and 3.5 liter V6 diesel. E 200 2.0-litre turbo petrol motor puts out 184 PS and 300 Nm of torque, new 2.0 liter diesel delivers 195 PS and 400 Nm, while the 3.5 liter V6 diesel motor delivers 258 PS and 620 Nm torque. All three are mated to a 9G Tronic 9 speed auto transmission, which delivers linear delivery of power and torque to the wheels.
Speaking about performance, the petrol variant accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 8.5 seconds and does a top speed of 240 kmph. 2.0 diesel motor does 0-100 kmph in 7.8 seconds and has a top speed of 240 kmph, while the 3.5L diesel does the same in just 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 250 kmph.
