New Okinawa electric scooter teased for 2020 Auto Expo

Okinawa electric MAXI scooter

Okinawa. Don’t let the name misguide you. Very much a Gurugram-based electric two-wheeler company.

Okinawa will showcase its Cruiser electric scooter concept at Auto Expo 2020. As we count down the days to the biggest auto show in the country, Okinawa has shared a teaser image of its Cruiser concept. Cruiser maxi scooter wears plenty of prominent design lines augmenting its maxi outlook. The longish steeped seat is hard to miss. This set up is encased in a sleek tail section, which appears split to accommodate the taillight.

The front setup includes a large apron with long and sleek turn indicators, and a large windscreen between inclined handlebars. It’s possible the company reveals more teasers as they prepare for a big reveal.

As the electric two-wheeler segment sees more and more products, a maxi-scooter is something of a first. While there’s a range of entry level e-scooters, Bajaj Chetak and Ather 450 are the bigger electric scooters. And now there’s a maxi scooter taking shape. There’s no such segment yet but it can appease a set of buyers who find scooters to be puny.

The concept doesn’t appear to have a footwell. This points to a more lean forward riding position with footrests. The bridge in place of a footwell may very well accommodate some feature of the battery unit, which would most likely be placed under the large seat setup. Given that understanding, one could expect larger battery, which could be gotten from swappable units considering the ample space below the seat design. Bigger battery means more power, more drive range.

Given the idea, Cruiser concept could in fact be a big product from Okinawa. Not just in terms of size but the power required to move it effectively. If this be the case, the Cruiser in production form (if that is in fact the longterm plan) will be the brand’s most powerful electric bike. The manufacturer does presently offer a variety of small range electric scooters currently in India.

Given the current tide, the electric scooter scene could get quite busy in the years to come. Okinawa, itself is a new name in the industry. Age old names in the motorcycle space are facing competition from new names like Okinawa, and tech-backed companies.

Alongwith Okinawa Cruiser concept, the manufacturer will showcase a new electric motorcycle. The project when under development was codenamed Oki100, and is ready for production.
