Speaking to Caradvice.com.au, VW Group Australia’s managing director John White stated that the automaker is ‘looking at’ the possibility of a crossover under Tiguan. While such a car is not officially confirmed yet, Mr. White added that it’s unavoidable for a major automaker like Volkswagen to stay away from the segment which is growing at an impressive rate world over.
While it’s still too early to talk about the whereabouts of the new VW compact crossover in question, it’s safe to expect it to be based on the MQB platform and employ a wide array of TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines depending on the market.
The sub-Tiguan crossover, if sanctioned, would be positioned to take on global compact crossovers like Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, Hyundai Creta, Suzuki S-Cross (last two will be launched in India shortly), etc.
Mr. White also confirmed that next gen VW Tiguan which is due for a global premiere later this year or early next year will have two wheelbase variants with the longer one featuring 7-seats. The 7-seat version would be coming to India. The German auto giant is also working on a stylish crossover that will plug the gap between Tiguan and Touareg.
