As a part of the ‘Make in India’ campaign, Renault India has plans to step up its localization program. With localization the key to success in India, Renault is set to increase localization where the Renault Duster SUV is concerned to over 80% from a current 70%.
The company recently launched Renault Kwid hatchback with localization level of 98% with even critical components such as nuts and bolts being produced locally. Renault India localization plan has allowed the company to price the Kwid at INR 2,56,968 for the base model while cost of maintenance is pegged at 19% lower than market leader, Maruti Alto.
Renault Duster, the company’s flagship SUV has seen falling sales over the past year. Sales in April to August 2014 stood at 16,216 units while sales in the same period in 2015 fell to just 7,560 units. Sales in August 2015 stood at 1,109 units as compared to sales of 3,101 units in August 2014. However, despite falling sales, Renault Duster has contributed 1,30,000 units to company sales volumes ever since it was launched in 2012.
Renault India now gets ready to launch the Duster facelift. Expected to be launched at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo in February 2016, localization levels will help the company to price the car aggressively. The Duster facelift will also be offered with an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT).
With new launches, Kwid and soon the Duster facelift, Renault India aims to increase market share to 5% from a current 1.9%. The company will also enhance sales and service outlets from a current 175 outlets to 205 by end of this year and to 280 by end of 2016.
