Two students from MIT in Pune, Vishnu Prathap and Suyash Kalbhor have created a replica of the Shelby Cobra 427, the fastest cars of its time. The project was a part of their final year course at Transportation Dept of MIT Institute of Design and was based on a suggestion from their professors.
The duo commenced work on the replica of Shelby Cobra 427 in August 2015. It was complete in 9 months and while all parts have been made in-house it is only the engine that has been taken right out off a Maruti 800.
5 core members besides Prof. Donshong Koren worked on this project. A sum of INR 5 lakh was sanctioned by the college and the students worked day and night from 10.00 am to 1.00 am at night while they did not go home from days.
Team member Deepak Vijayan worked on the fiberglass body and has come pretty close to making it look like so similar to the real thing that few can tell it apart. Other team members also toiled relentlessly on the project. The end result was a matter of pride as few could distinguish between the replica and the real Shelby Cobra.
1965 Shelby Cobra 427, on which the project was based, was the fastest car in its time. It had a top speed of 265 kmph and could accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 10.3 seconds. It owes its original design to Carroll Shelby an American automotive designer who worked along with British car makers, AC cars.
