Upcoming Ssangyong Korando will be positioned so as to take on Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano and soon to be launched Hyundai ix25.
The facelifted Ssangyong Korando made its presence felt in international markets in 2013. It receives a new front fascia with new headlamps, grille, bumpers, tail lamps and alloy wheels while interiors also sport changes in the form of a new instrument cluster and seat fabrics. Enhanced fuel efficiency and auto emissions are seen on the Korando powertrain while safety features abound in the form of 6 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESP, reverse parking sensor, active head restraint and Hill Start Assist.
To maintain price at competitive levels, especially since Renault and Nissan rivals are localized and Hyundai has announced over 90% localization for its crossover ix25, Mahindra too is planning to localize the Korando heavily. Considering the competition, Mahindra could launch SsangYong Korando in the price bracket of Rs 10-12 lakhs. In order to get this pricing, the company will have to achieve upto 50% localization. This will not be easy, as the engine and transmission will be imported from South Korea.
Korando is a very important product for SsangYong. It commands 52% of Ssangyong Motors total vehicle exports. The company exported 37,863 units in 2014. This is not the first time news about Korando launch in India has surfaced. Back in 2013 as well, Mahindra had shown interest in launching Korando in India. But due to unknown reasons, the car was not launched.
