With the near-production version of Tata 45X just days away from its world premiere at Geneva International Motor Show 2019 (GIMS), new information about the premium hatchback has emerged online. Tata’s maiden premium hatchback will be fielded in a volume-rich segment which is currently populated by the Maruti Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20, Honda Jazz.
A recent post in Team-bhp forum suggests that the petrol variant of the 45X hatchback will be equipped with Integrated Starter Generator (ISG) which qualifies the vehicle to be categorized as mild-hybrid. The setup is expected to be similar to the SHVS mild-hybrid system offered by Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and Ertiga.
The ISG would help the IC engine with functions like torque assist and brake energy regeneration. The overall improvement in fuel efficiency could be up to 10%. The 45X will be powered by the Revotron 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbocharged MPFI petrol engine. On board the Nexon, this engine produces 110 PS and 170 Nm of torque.
The diesel variant of the 45X will employ the Revotorq 1.5-liter unit which is also found in the Nexon. While the 45X diesel is not likely to receive mild-hybrid technology, it is reported to be offered with cruise control. Both petrol and diesel engines will offer drive modes which alter the engine map. Standard transmission option is expected to a 6-speed manual unit but the petrol variant is expected to be offered with an AT option.
In terms of styling, the production-spec premium hatchback will retain the salient features of the 45X concept car which was unveiled at 2018 Auto Expo. The Maruti Baleno rival will sport a modern interior with lengthy equipment list. Tata Motors will be aiming to achieve 5-star safety rating for its upcoming model.
Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle business unit has been enjoying brisk growth in sales with Tiago and Nexon being primary contributors. The newly launched Harrier and the upcoming 45X are expected to further boost sales. The automaker is also working on a micro-crossover (Hornbill) and 7-seat version of Harrier. The commercial name of the Tata 45X hatchback is expected to be revealed at GIMS 2019 early next month. Launch of 45X in India will take place in Q3 of 2019 CY.
