Tata Motors has finally launched the Altroz in India. The much-awaited premium hatchback from Tata will take on the likes of Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20.
Tata Motors claims that 49% of cars sold in India are hatchbacks. Out of this, 26% buy premium hatchbacks such as the Tata Altroz. Currently, Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20 lead in this segment. Together, the cars manage to register a sales figure of about 25k units on an average, every month.
Tata Motors has been aiming at having a pie of this segment for long. Today, with the launch of Altroz at a starting price of Rs 5.29 lakh ex-showroom, Tata has done just that to the market of the Maruti Baleno and Hyundai i20. Will the company be successful? Only time will tell.

The Tata Altroz is currently the only car in the segment that boasts of 5-star safety rating in Global NCAP. Thus, the desirability of the Altroz could become higher than its proven rivals. The Tata Altroz follows the brand’s Impact 2.0 design language. It gets a honeycomb mesh grille, LED DRLs by the front fog lamps, split-LED tail lamps and rear door handles flushed into the quarter panel.
The Altroz gets five colours choices: Street Gold, Skyline Silver, Downtown Red, Midtown Grey and Avenue White; each of which is seen with a contrasting gloss-black roof. The hatchback rides on R16 dual-tone laser-cut alloy wheels. The electrically adjustable ORVMs are finished in Piano Black with chrome accents.
The highlight of the new Tata Altroz is its uniquely shaped DLO (Day Light Opening) which enhances surrounding visibility to a good margin. The 90-degree opening doors allow for easy ingress and egress and the wearable key facilitates keyless entry. The hatchback boasts of driver and passenger comforts such as height-adjustable driver seat, front sliding armrest with storage, rear central armrest and rear AC vents.
The infotainment system takes shape in the form of a 100W Harman audio system with four speakers and two tweeters with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The customized infotainment screen offers three choices of theme: Zeal, Zen and Zing. The next-gen smartphone connectivity feature ensures intuitive vocal interaction with the car’s infotainment system.
Tata Altroz receives an outstanding array of safety features. The Tata Altroz is born out of the brand’s all-new ALFA platform which employs a highly efficient energy-absorbing body structure. It also gets ABS 9.3 version, EBD, ISOFIX child seat mounts, corner stability control, voice alerts and park assistance. Powering the Tata Altroz are BS6 petrol and BS6 diesel engines. The 1.2-litre Revotron 3-cylinder petrol unit delivers 86 PS power and 113 Nm torque. The Revotorq diesel unit is a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder motor which delivers 90 PS and 200 Nm. Both are mated to a 5-speed manual transmission.
