Tata Motors is working on a new flagship SUVs to increase their market share in the UV segment. Codenamed Tata Q501, the upcoming premium crossover is will be offered in 5 and 7 seat options. It will make global debut at the 2018 Auto Expo.

To be launched in the Rs 13 lakh segment, the SUV will rival the new Jeep Compass, which has been a runaway success in India, thanks to its premium features, solid built and attractive pricing. The new Tata SUV will also feature similar qualities. It will be underpinned by the old generation Land ROver Discovery Sport platform and will be priced lower than Jeep Compass.

Both, Jeep Compass and new Tata SUV will be produced at the Fiat plant in Ranjangaon, Pune. The plant is a 50-50 JV between Fiat and Tata.

Despite sharing platform components with a Land Rover, the upcoming Tata premium SUV is said to have a completely different appeal, appearance and feel. To keep the costs at bay, Tata Motors has refrained from using the tech-laden JLR Ingenium family of engines.

Instead, the automaker is going to use the 2.0-litre Fiat MultiJet II diesel engine. This is the same engine which we have already seen on the newly launched Jeep Compass. The same engine will power the new Tata SUV. The five seater will get a engine which will be tuned to deliver 140 PS while the 7 seater will get the same specs as seen on Jeep Compass, which is 170 PS.

Tata Safari Storme Delhi Diesel Ban
One of the two SUVs is most likely to get the Safari nameplate.

Keeping up with their premium positioning, the Tata Q501 would be packed with several safety features, driver assistance systems and latest connectivity features. The SUV will be the most feature-rich and advanced car from Tata till date.

The flagship duo were previously expected to be ready sometime in 2017. But that has changed now, and the project is set to enter production in 2019. Get ready to see the first concept at the 2018 Auto Expo next month.
