Relatively newcomer Maruti Grand Vitara is now at No. 2 in the compact SUV sales list having overtaken the Kia Seltos by a significant margin
In the earlier post, we discussed sales of sub-compact SUVs like Nexon, Brezza, Sonet, Venue in the sub 4m segment. In this post, we will take a look at Compact SUV sales in December 2022, which saw a YoY growth of 64.68 percent while sales fell MoM by 6.87 percent.
The main reason for this growing popularity of compact SUVs in India is the fact that newer models are being added to this segment. SUV sales even have overtaken that of hatchbacks and sedans thanks to its better driving stance and higher road clearance.
Compact SUV Sales Dec 2022 vs Dec 2021 – YoY
In December 2022, sales of top 10 compact SUVs stood at 33,136 units, up 64.68 percent over 20,121 units sold in Dec 2021. This was a 13,015 unit volume growth. MoM sales however, dipped 6.87 percent from 35,579 units sold in Nov 2021.
Hyundai Creta remained the best sold model in this segment with 10,205 units sold in Dec 2022, up 34.12 percent from 7,609 units sold in Dec 2021. MoM sales dipped 23.39 percent from 13,321 units sold in Nov 2022. The Creta currently commands a 30.80 percent share on this list. Hyundai Creta facelift, which is on display at the 2023 Auto Expo, is set for launch during the coming months and will see major design updates in its exteriors and interiors. It is also set to gain ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) technology.
At No. 2 was the Maruti Grand Vitara. A relatively newcomer to this segment, it has already shot to a second spot on the list ahead of the Kia Seltos. Sales in Dec 2022 stood at 6,171 units, up MoM by 39.21 percent from 4,433 units sold in Nov 2022. Maruti Suzuki recently announced the Vitara Matte Black while the Grand Vitara CNG is now being offered in two variants of Delta and Zeta.
Kia Seltos noted an increase in YoY sales by 49.43 percent to 5,995 units in Dec 2022 from 4,012 units sold in Dec 2021. Currently holding an 18.09 percent share, MoM sales dipped by 35.43 percent from 9,284 units sold in Nov 2022. It was in September 2022 that Toyota launched the HyRyder. Sales stood at 4,201 units in Dec 2022, up 34.82 percent MoM from 3,116 units sold in Nov 2022. The HyRyder is regaled for its first-in-segment strong hybrid tech along with best-in-class fuel efficiency.
Compact SUV Sales Dec 2022 vs Nov 2022 – MoM
At No. 5 was the Volkswagen Taigun compact SUV with a YoY de-growth in sales to 2,691 units, down 4.84 percent as against 2,828 units sold in Dec 2021. MoM sales however, increased by 35.98 percent over 1,979 units sold in Nov 2022. VW Taigun along with the Skoda Kushaq have received 5 Star rating in GNCAP. Both Taigun and Kushaq are based on the same India specific MQB A0 IN platform that allows for a stable structure under impact.
Sales of the Skoda Kushaq fell by 23.03 percent YoY to 2,186 units in Dec 2022 from 2,840 units sold in Dec 2021. MoM sales on the other hand, increased by 8.81 percent from 2,009 units sold in Nov 2022. MG Astor posted a YoY and MoM growth to 1,687 units in the past month. The company had sold 1,125 units in Dec 2021 and 1,434 units in Nov 2022 of the Astor compact SUV. Three other compact SUVs – Maruti S-Cross, Nissan Kicks and Renault Duster, that had appeared in the Dec 2021 sales list, have since been discontinued.
