August 2020 pointed to significant improvement in demand for almost every model in the top 25 list
Sales figures for August 2020 have indicated that there has come a time when demands for new cars are once more on the rise. Almost every automaker in India has posted positive growth after several months of dismal sales, with year on year comparisons showing off a 20 percent growth in auto sales.
The emergence from lockdown period and upcoming festive season is what could have stirred up some sales with more than 2.34 lakh cars being sold in August 2020. This increase could be related to the demand for personal means of transport over fears of using public facilities, a growth in consumer confidence and automakers completing pending orders which had been put on hold during the lockdown period. Here is countdown of the top 25 cars sold in the past month.
Maruti Suzuki Dominates
Maruti Suzuki once again commanded the top 4 spots, and with 11 out of 25 cars on this list. The Swift, Alto, WagonR and DZire. Each of these models showed off positive growth over sales in August 2019. There were a total of 14,869 units of the Swift 5 seater compact hatchback sold in the past month. This was a 19 percent increase as against sales of 12,444 units sold in August 2019.
The Swift was followed by the Alto at No. 2 with 14,397 units sold last month. This was a 42 percent increase as compared to 10,123 units sold in August 2019. The Alto hatchback was launched in the year 2000. It has been an all time best seller in India for 16 consecutive years, particularly appealing to first time buyers in the country and recently reached milestone sales of 40 lakh units.
Maruti Suzuki WagonR sales in the past month increased to 13,770 units as against 11,402 units sold in August 2019. At No. 4 was the Maruti Suzuki DZire sedan with 13,629 units sold last month. This was a 3 percent increase over 13,274 units sold in the same month of the previous year.
Maruti Baleno was at No. 6, though sales dipped marginally. Sales in the past month stood at 10,742 units, down 3 percent as against 11,067 units sold in the same month of the previous year. The Ertiga at No. 9 and Eeco at No. 10 also noted positive sales last month.
Maruti Brezza was at No. 13 with 6,903 units sold last month, 206 units or 3 percent less than what the automaker had sold in August 2019 which stood at 7,109 units. Celerio was at No. 15 with 5,684 units sold, up 19 percent as against 4,765 units sold in August 2019, and the newcomer S-Presso at No. 17 with 5,312 units sold. The Maruti Suzuki Ignis, noted a 147 percent increase in sales to 3,262 units in August 2020, up from 1,322 units sold in the same month of the previous year.

Hyundai had its Creta SUV in No. 5 on the list of top 25 best selling cars in India. The Hyundai Creta noted a massive 96 percent increase in sales in August with 11,758 units sold in the month as against 6,001 units sold in August 2019.
Hyundai also had the Grand i10 at No.8 and the Venue and i20 Elite at Nos.11 and 12 respectively while the Xcent was at No. 25. Of these, only the Venue showed a de-growth with 8,267 units sold in the past month, down 12 percent as against 9,342 units sold in August 2019. Xcent sales on the other hand increased 145 percent to 3,228 units, up from 1,316 units sold in August 2019. Hyundai’s cousin, Kia too was in the list with Seltos. Kia Seltos at No. 7 noted sales of 10,655 units in August 2020, up 71 percent as against 6,236 units sold in August 2019.
Tiago, Nexon, Altroz
Tata Motors had three of its cars in the list of top 25 best selling cars in August 2020. Tiago compact hatchback came in at No. 14 with 5,743 units sold in the past month, up 89 percent as against 3,037 units sold in August 2019. Nexon and Altroz stood at No. 18 and 19 respectively on this list. Nexon sales increased 128 percent to 5,179 units sold in August 2020 while the Altroz, launched in January 2020 saw sales at 4,951 units.
Mahindra had the Bolero at No. 16 with 5,487 units sold, up 37 percent as against 3,993 units sold in August 2020. Sales of the Scorpio, at No. 23, increased 16 percent to 3,327 units, up from 2,862 units sold in August 2019.
Honda Cars had a single model on this list of top sellers in August 2020 with the Amaze with sales suffering a de-growth of 19 percent down to 3,684 units. The company had sold 4,535 units in the same month of the previous year.
Renault Triber and Kwid were at Nos. 20 and 22 respectively with models showing significant increase in sales in the past month. Triber sales increased 57 percent to 3,906 units while Kwid sales jumped 68 percent to 3,677 units in August 2020.
