Following Toyota’s 2.0-liter engine in Lexus NX 200t introduced last year, Toyota has introduced its second new generation Turbo Engine. This one has 1.2l capacity, and will make its way onto the new Auris.
This engine will receive a single scroll turbocharger with cylinder head with integrated water cooled exhaust. This will help to retain exhaust temperatures while at the same time retaining temperatures to allow thermal load cooling for responsive acceleration and maximum torque across rpm range.
With a displacement of 1,196cc, bore stroke of 71.5×74.5mm and compression ratio of 10.0, the new Toyota engine is capable of 116 PS power at 5,200 to 5,600 rpm and peak torque of 185 Nm at 1,500 to 4,000 rpm. This new Toyota 8NR-FTS 1.2L turbo engine is fuel efficient promising 4.7 liters per 100 km (21.27 kmpl), which equates to 50 US mpg and 60 UK mpg.
Where combustion speed is concerned, vertically rotating swirl is seen in its cylinder while D-4T directi injection turbo technology is what adds additional torque while the engine is also 36 percent thermally efficient. Another outstanding feature on the new Toyota engine is the continuous variable valve timing VVT-iW on the Atkinson Cycle which adjusts the valve timing according to load.
To be first launched in Japan, Europe and the US, this new engine will soon be seen powering range of new Toyota cars. Considering the Indian auto industry, there is a possibility that this engine could make its way to the country in the future. If not, it could be safe to expect a locally designed similar tech mill from Toyota India.
