Triumph eyes leadership in Indian sportsbike segment this year

Having grown five fold from 500 to 3,000 units last fiscal, Triumph Motorcycles India is planning to become the best selling sportsbike brand in India this fiscal. As of now, the British brand is second best selling premium two wheeler maker in India, next only to Harley Davidson which sold nearly 5,000 units last fiscal.

Triumph Motorcycles India is expected to register a growth of 20-25% this fiscal without having to reduce its base price.

Harley Davidson’s volume boost comes from the Street 750 entry level cruiser which starts at INR 4.69 lakhs. In comparison, the most affordable Triumph is the new Bonneville Street Twin which is priced at INR 6.9 lakhs (both prices are ex-showroom, Delhi).

Triumph currently assembles a handful of its 15-strong product portfolio locally. The new Bonneville range which includes the Street Twin, T120, Thruxton R is expected to be the primary growth driver this fiscal.

The company currently has outlets in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Ahmadabad, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Indore, Chandigarh and Kochi. Three more outlets are expected to be opened by the end of this financial year and the dealership count would to increased to 20 by 2020.

In the last financial year, the Indian sportsbike segment witnessed a definitive shift to 500+ cc segment (INR 5 lakhs+). This trend is expected to continue this year, making Triumph the biggest beneficiary.
