Scoop – TVS Apache RR 310 S (Akula) top speed higher than Duke 390

TVS Akula 310 concept made global debut at the 2016 Auto Expo earlier last year. A little over 1 year later, the bike is all set to be launched in India.


TVS Akula 310 concept made global debut at the 2016 Auto Expo. TVS Akula (means Shark in Russian) is a fully faired concept based on the BMW G310R motorcycle which made its global debut in November 2015.

The production-spec TVS Akula, which is going to be christened TVS Apache RR 310 S upon launch, has begun road testing. TVS plans to launch the bike in India during the month of July / August. Once launched, it will compete with the likes of new KTM Duke 250, Mahindra Mojo, Honda CBR250RR, etc. Price is expected to start from INR 1.8 lakh, ex-showroom.

Earlier this week, a reader had shared an interesting video about how while riding Bajaj Dominar 400 he was unable ot catch up with the Apache 310 which was on test. The reason is simple. Apache 310 is faster and has a higher top speed than Bajaj Dominar. In fact, our sources tell us that the new TVS Apache RR 310 S has a speedo-indicated top speed of 175 kmph. This means, it is not only faster than Dominar 400, but also faster than Duke 390.

This comes as a surprise on many levels. For one, the Apache 310 is powered by a less powerful engine, as compared to te engine which powers the Duke 390 and Dominar 400. It seems the magic lies in BMW engineering, which has developed the engine which powers the Apache 310. In addition to this, there could be carbon fiber parts, as were seen on the concept, which has probably helped the bike shed extra weight; resulting in added performance.

Speaking about the Apache 310, the overall design has been inspired from the flagship BMW sportsbike, S1000RR. Some of the features / highlights of the prod-ready Akula are – brakes from Bybre (front 300mm 4 pistons), ABS from Continental, suspension from KYB, ECU by Magneti Marelli.

The concept which was shown by TVS at the Auto Expo had a lot of carbon fiber body parts. This was done so as to keep the weight of the bike minimum as it was a racing concept. But, there were no plans for launching the Akula 310 production spec variant with carbon fiber parts, as it will increase the price of the bike considerably.

New Duke 390

But the response TVS has received from the showcasing of Akula 310 with carbon fiber fairing has been nothing less than phenomenal. This has resulted in the management contemplating into thinking about launching Apache RR 310 S with carbon fiber fairing when it is launched. TVS is aiming at retaining about 75% of the parts of the concept on the production-ready Akula.

Power to the TVS Apache RR 310 S comes from a 313 cc single cc liquid cooled FI engine. This engine delivers 34 PS power and 28 Nm torque aboard the G310R, and is expected to be tuned differently for Apache 310. It is mated to a 6-speed transmission and claims to deliver a mileage in excess of 33 kmpl on board the G310R. Sadly, the G310R launch in India has been delayed, and will take place post the Apache 310 launch.
