Vitara Brezza helps Maruti to become India’s largest UV maker
Maruti Suzuki has emerged as the country’s largest UV maker in May with sales higher than that of Mahindra & Mahindra.
Taking into account cumulative sales of utility vehicles during the first two months of this financial year, it can be noted that Mahindra & Mahindra no longer heads the list. In the first two months of FY18, Maruti Suzuki UV sales stood at 43,246 units as compared to M&M sales of 37,694 units.
In April and May 2017, it was noted that demand for Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and Ertiga were much higher than that of M&M’s Scorpio and Bolero. Maruti Suzuki sold 5,500 SUVs more than M&M during these two months.
While Maruti Suzuki SUV sales in April and May were at 20,638 units and 22,608 units, M&M sales stood at 18,363 units in April and 19,331 units in May resulting in a significant dip in sales for the once leading SUV maker which was a good 20,000 units ahead of Maruti Suzuki in FY17. Taking the calendar year January to May 2017 into account M&M is still in the lead, ahead of Maruti Suzuki but by only 5,000 units.
Maruti Suzuki has registered growth of 45% in the UV segment while M&M reported a 6% decline. It was the launch of the new Vitara Brezza that has allowed the company to take leadership position in this segment. The vehicle has been widely accepted and noting increased demand with the model selling over 10,000 units a month while bookings to the tune of 50,000 units are still to be completed.
Later this year, Maruti Suzuki India is expected to launch the S-Cross facelift. This will further add to the company’s UV sales. New S-Cross facelift will be a cosmetic update, as engine option will continue be same as before.
