With design inspired from the Volkswagen CrossBlue Concept which was displayed at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show, the new generation Tiguan is all set to be officially revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Expected to go on sale next year, as 2017 model, the new crossover has been confirmed for India launch.
These are the first official sketches of the new Tiguan. Based on the MQB platform, the crossover is longer than the outgoing version, offering more space on the inside. As compared to current gen Tiguan, the second generation variant is also lighter by 80 kgs, thereby helping in achieving higher fuel efficiency.
Volkswagen Tiguan teaser sketch, rear quarterCompared to the current Tiguan, which features a very bland design, the new gen Tiguan features a more attractive and sporty character. Though it is not as flashy as the concept on which it is based on, it does have the right amount of chrome to maintain the car’s premium look.
The SUV was spied completely undisguised in Canada last month, where it was on a shoot. The leaked photos revealed new gen Tiguan’s rear quarter, roof and new alloy wheel design. The sloping roof with protruding roof spolier gives the rear a sporty look. Headlights and taillights get LED treatment while the panaromic sunroof adds to the exterior feature list.
To be offered in a choice of petrol and diesel engine options, expect the entry level petrol variant to get the 1.4l TSI engine, while the top end variant will get Passat sourced 2.0l TDI generating 240 PS. More details will be revealed later today, when the car gets revealed at Volkswagen Preview Night.
Once launched, the new Tiguan will compete with the likes of Nissan Qashqai, Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5 and the likes. In India, expect the price of new Tiguan to be in the range of INR 23-28 lakhs, and rival the likes of Chevrolet Trailblazer, Ford Endeavour, and Toyota Fortuner.
