The VW Ameo sub-4 metre compact sedan which is set to make its global premiere at the Auto Expo early next month in Noida has been spied without any camouflage for the first time. Design and developed for the Indian market, the Ameo is based on the Polo platform and is essentially a Vento with a stunted truck.
The short boxy rear fascia with angular taillights looks not very different from that of the Hyundai Xcent. The front end design is not expected to be very different from that of the Vento but one can expect a new grille and bumper. As the previous spyshots revealed, the interior too is identical to that of the Polo/Vento twins.
The VW Ameo will be available with both petrol and diesel engines. The Polo’s 1.5-litre TDi motor mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox would be the diesel engine of choice. It remains to be seen whether the compact sedan will offer both 1.2-litre MPI and TSI petrol engines or not.
VW India would be relying on a very high localization level and sub-4m excise duty benefits to arrive at a competitive pricing. The VW Ameo would be pitted against the likes of Maruti Dzire, Ford Figo Aspire, Hyundai Xcent and Tata Zest.
