About a month ago, Volkswagen India had officially confirmed that their new compact sedan will make global debut at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo, which will be open for the public from 5th Feb to 9th Feb 2016. But before that, here is a sneak-peek into the new VW compact sedan for India, thanks to the latest spy shots.
To be launched in a segment that experiences monthly sales of about 30,000 to 35,000 units, a new VW sub 4m sedan is based on a modified Polo / Vento platform. To be reportedly called Ameo, it will compete with the likes of Maruti DZire, Tata Zest, Honda Amaze, Ford Figo Aspire, and Hyundai Xcent.
Compared to the Polo, which is 3970 mm long, VW Ameo sedan will be a bit longer, possibly 3995 mm or 3999 mm, to utilize the sub 4m excise benefits. Apart from this, it will also get a shorter wheelbase, than that of Polo’s 2470 mm.
The camouflaged VW Ameo you see in the images above, clearly reveals its stubbed boot with Polo’s taillights. Compared to the Polo, we expect Ameo to be more spacious, offering more legroom and boot space. To keep costs down, VW India will also share a lot of parts of Polo / Vento with the new Ameo.
Speaking about engine options, one can expect to see Polo’s 1.2-liter petrol 3-cyl and 1.5-liter diesel 4-cyl engine options on offer. These engines will be mated to a 5 speed MT, while the petrol option could get 7 speed DSG.
Built at an investment of INR 720 crore, VW Ameo is being readied for production at VW India’s plant in Pune. Speaking about price, new VW Ameo is expected to be priced below Polo hatchback, thus making it the most affordable VW India car on offer.
