TVS Apache 160 launched – Rivals Bajaj Pulsar NS 160, Suzuki Gixxer 155

Disclaimer – The manufacturer (TVS Motor Company) has blacklisted Rushlane from it’s events/rides as a consequence of decisions based on restrictive practices. This blog is reliant on available media material and study notes (press sourced).

From the looks of it, it draws from the TVS Apache 200. Available in 3 variants, pricing is as follows – Carb with front disc – Rs 81,490; Carb with front and rear disc – Rs 84,490; and fuel-injected (FI) with front and rear disc – Rs 89,990. Price listed are as per ex-showroom, Delhi.

Apache 160 journey so far – RTR 160’s journey spans a decade, and all along the bike has been made available with periodic cosmetic upgrades as has been the norm in the industry. But with TVS trying to make a mark in motorcycle sales, especially the motorcycle range, it’s time for a proper update.

Cosmetic features sharing with RTR 200 4V – Headlight, and tail-light, turn indicators, tank, exhaust design, and instrumentation.

Individual cosmetic and mechanical features – The centre panel on the 160 is its own. Seat cowls and the long seat design as against split seats is unique to the 160. The same can be said for its alloy wheel design. Quite distinctly, Apache 160 FI uses a conventional handlebar for comfy riding position instead of the sporty appeal clip-on handlebar. The bike sits on a new frame. The twin shock-absorbers at the rear have been replaced with a Showa monoshock.

Colours – Racing Red; Metallic Blue; and Knight Black.

Apache 160 tech specs – Fitted with a four-valve (4V), 159.7 cc air-cooled engine, power output is 16.8 ps at 8,000 rpm is the fuel-injected (FI) version. For the carburettor (carb) variant, power output is pegged at 16.5 ps. Max torque output for both bikes is listed at 14.8 Nm at 6,500 rpm. Power and torque output for the outgoing model were pegged at 15.1 hp and 13 Nm.

Mated to a 5-speed gearbox, the new Apache 160 relies on oil cooling for improved heat management. Kerb weight is measured at 143 kgs for the drum variant; and 145 kgs for the disc variant. Seat height stands at 800 mm, and ground clearance at 180 mm. More details in the table below.
