It was expected that Altroz Racer will be launched by March 2023, but that hasn’t been the case
As may be recalled, Tata had showcased Altroz Racer variant at the Auto Expo earlier this year in January. It was assumed that the hot hatch would debut in the following weeks. But with no further updates, it appears that the project has been put on the back burner. However, this recent spotting of a new test mule yet again fuels speculations about the launch of Altroz Racer.
Altroz Racer new test mule spotted
This latest Altroz test mule has been spotted in Ooty with Maharashtra number plate. As the vehicle was fully camouflaged, one cannot see any external markings that may indicate towards Altroz Racer. However, there’s a handwritten ‘Racer’ marking on the engine. This doesn’t seem to be some sort of a coincidence. Moreover, the interiors reveal the presence of a 6-speed gearbox. Collectively, all this evidence makes a strong case for the test mule being Altroz Racer.
There were two other Altroz units accompanying the test mule. One was in grey shade, whereas the other sported the all-black look. These too had Maharashtra number plates. While the grey Altroz didn’t have anything extraordinary, the Dark one had cables coming out of the hood and running through the slot meant for rear-view mirror. It is not certain what exactly Tata is testing with this Altroz test mule.
While there is no official word from Tata, it is possible that Altroz Racer could debut by year-end or early 2024. It will primarily go up against the Hyundai i20 N Line. As the hot hatch will have multiple new features, it is likely to command premium pricing. The existing model is available in the price range of Rs 6.60 lakh to Rs 10.74 lakh. Turbo petrol range starts at Rs 9.10 lakh.
Altroz Racer specs
As several months have passed since its unveiling, Altroz Racer could get some new updates when launched. At the Auto Expo 2023, Altroz Racer was equipped with a 1.2-litre turbo petrol motor. It generates 120 PS of max power and 170 Nm of peak torque. Altroz standard version already has a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine. But that makes only 110 PS and 140 Nm. The Racer variant gains 10 PS and 30 Nm. That’s enough to make a tangible impact on overall drive dynamics. It should be able to achieve 0 to 100 kmph in under 10 seconds.
Altroz Racer’s turbo petrol engine also closely matches the performance of Hyundai i20 N Line variant. The latter is equipped with a 1.0-litre turbo petrol motor, generating 120 PS and 172 Nm. Transmission choices include 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT.
Altroz Racer gets special cosmetic upgrades across exteriors and interiors. Equipment list includes ventilated leatherette seats, wireless charger, electric sunroof with voice assist, air purifier, 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system and rear AC vents.
