Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One pre-season testing in Jerez sees MGP W02 race car lap on 2012 Pirelli tyres

Nico Rosberg tested MGP W02 race car in the morning session at Jerez, and Michael Schumacher got in the driver’s seat in the afternoon. Both Mercedes AMG Petronas drivers went through a set-up programme that was focused on figuring out the of the 2012 Pirelli tyres. The test ensured that the GP team got ‘valuable mileage’ on a range of test parameters for the 2012 Formula One (F1) season.

Micheal Schumacher continues testing through today, and Nico Rosberg will take to the wheel on Thursday again. On day 1 of 2012 Formula 1 pre-season testing in Jerez, Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus clocked the fastest lap at 1:19.670 75, and Paul Di Resta of Force India took second place at 1:19.772. For Mercedes AMG Petronas, Nico Rosberg came in with the 3rd fastest lap at 1:20.219 and Michael Schumacher posted the 6th fastest lap at 1:20.794.

Nico Rosberg had this to say. “We made a very good start to our testing programme today and completed 56 laps this morning. I was driving the 2011 car, so it felt comfortable straightaway. We tested some different things in perfect weather conditions and started learning about the 2012 Pirelli tyres and how they work. I was really happy to be out on track in my Mercedes and I know that, back at the factory, our development of the new car is running according to our plan.”

Michael Schumacher had this to say, “After a long break, it feels terrific being back in the car and hitting the circuit again. Our main job was to get a first impression of the tyres for 2012 and to start understanding them. They feel like a step forward, more consistent and comfortable to drive, and the biggest difference is with the rear tyre. Thanks to everybody at Pirelli for their good job this winter. Let’s see what we can learn tomorrow.”
