A ‘premiere’ in the motorcycle industry that combines the innovation of two important Italian brands Ducati and Dainese, and represents an important step forward in safety in the world of two wheels.
Ducati, always attentive to new technologies and security, introduces the new Multistrada 1200 S Touring D | air, the model provided an intelligent system integrated in the vehicle and connected to the wireless jackets Ducati Apparel D | air ® Dainese signed, equipped with air bags. It is a ‘premiere’ in the field motorcycle that combines the innovation of two major Italian brands and represents an important step forward in security in the world of two wheels.
Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Touring D | air ® is the first production motorcycle airbag system integrated in clothing to have passed the rigorous testing necessary to obtain certification TÜV SÜD issued by the authoritative body responsible for the German standard for wearable airbag. Ducati technology developed in collaboration with Dainese, stresses once again the commitment of the Italian brand for a continuous improvement of safety, already guaranteed from the Ducati Safety Pack, which includes ABS adjustable multi-level, traction control also adjustable and Ride- by-Wire control power output.
The Multistrada 1200 S Touring D | air ® is also equipped with semi-active Skyhook suspension and will be available in European dealerships from May, 2014, together with jackets D | air ® Street.
Technology Multistrada D | air ® Street
The airbag is now universally popular in the automotive industry, confirmed as the best passive safety system. For an airbag for street use to be truly effective, it must have a response time of less than 80 milliseconds to allow for adequate protection of the pilot in case of impact with another vehicle.
The D | air ® Ducati Multistrada was designed to be activated in just 45 milliseconds and protect vital parts of the pilot’s body exposed to impactthat were not protected by absorbing the impact force thanks to an integrated inflatable bag inside the jacket by Dainese. The airbag is able to expand in a fraction of a second, without hindering the pilot. Furthermore, the system is able to distinguish an accident potentially dangerous from a low speed or by a simple fall from the bike stops.
The intelligence of the system is ensured by a sophisticated algorithm that manages data from two sensors triaxial accelerometer attached to the feet right and left of the front fork of the Multistrada, and other two rear triaxial accelerometers, mounted in the electronic control unit ( ECU) of D | air ®, located under in the saddle. When the sensors detect a potential accident condition, the algorithm uses only 25 milliseconds to decide whether or not it is necessary to inflate the airbag bag. In case of intervention, the ECU D | air ®, which is located at the edge of the Multistrada and is in constant contact with the two-way radio jackets, the Dainese airbag inflation is initiated and it occurs in just 20 milliseconds. In all the system is effective in just 45 milliseconds from start of impact.
D | air ® increases only 1kg weight of the Multistrada, and the only visible difference is the addition of an LED display above the main instrument cluster, which consistently shows the condition of the system. The display is divided into three horizontal sections bright, from left to right, state jacket “Pilot”, the light warning ” D | air” and the state coat “Passenger”. Designed to inform the user, the sections Pilot and Passenger remain permanently lit ( light green ) to confirm that the jackets with both airbags are connected ( coupled ) to the system D | air ® and ready for use. In case of malfunction on the jacket, the signal light alerts the user with a slow flash.
The yellow light will remain off when the system is activated and ready for use, but will light up to signal low battery jacket or a system error D | air ®.
Circular cross-section matrix of dots ( Dot-matrix ) of the original instrumentation of the Multistrada is used to display information on the battery charge airbag for driver and passenger, and to remember the timing of scheduled maintenance of the jacket.
Terms to deploy D | air ® on Multistrada 1200 S Touring
The intelligent system D | air ® Multistrada 1200 S Touring is able to recognize the main situations in which control to the expansion of the airbag jackets. These conditions include:
a) frontal impact of the vehicle with another object
b ) a side collision with another vehicle or collision by another vehicle
c) loss of control of the motorcycle and slid on its side. In the latter situation, the airbag expands to
offer protection to the driver and passenger in case of impact with an obstacle during the slide after the fall.
Thanks to the ability to recognize these conditions, the system avoids to intervene in situations that do not involve immediate danger, such as in the case of aggressive sporty driving, loss of balance during a manoeuvre at low speeds, or dropping the bike when parked.
Jacket D | air ® Street signed Dainese to Multistrada
The jacket D | air ® Street Ducati (not included in the equipment of the bike ) has been designed for long journeys and provides maximum comfort and protection thanks to technology airbag D | air ® membrane GORE -TEX ®. In addition to the airbag system D | air ® Street, which turns on via a slide switch integrated into the garment, the jacket is equipped with protectors for shoulders and elbows and a back protector wave located inside the waterproof and breathable GORE- TEX ® Gloves with removable thermal liner. The system, highly innovative, has been designed, developed and patented by Dainese SpA, an example of Italian excellence in the field of protective motorcycle.
D | air ® Street is a pneumatic system composed of two bags at high pressure with a three-dimensional total volume of 12 liters and two gas generators to cool technology integrated into the lining of his jacket. The three-dimensional structure provides controlled expansion at high pressure airbags, which take a preformed shape designed to wrap the body of the pilot, protecting it. The jacket weighs just 1.5 kg more than a standard jacket and also presents the same characteristics of fit, while ensuring maximum absorption of impact force with a small footprint.
The jacket D | air ® Street reduces transmission of the force of impact to the body by 72 % compared to a traditional protector and 89% compared to a protector for the chest. In this way, it maximizes protection of the back, collarbone and chest, as well as limiting the angle of the rider’s head respect to the neck, reducing helmet movements during rolling in case of accident.
The system integrated into the jacket D | air ® Street requires a review every 24 months starting from the first connection (pairing) the Multistrada D | air ®, and is powered by a rechargeable battery via USB connection built into the garment (five hours of charging ensures an autonomy of 30 hours). The deadlines of scheduled maintenance and the charge level of the batteries of the jacket D | air ® are clearly indicated on the the Multistrada 1200 S Touring instrument panel.

The new system D | air ® is fully integrated into the highly succesful Multistrada 1200 S Touring bike, which is extremely versatile with electronics designed to enhance the feeling of safety that includes the suspension Ducati Skyhook ( DSS ).
The addition of D | air ® completes the long list of eye-catching high-tech features of the Multistrada, which confirm its reputation as an innovative model for the industry. These include the Testastretta 11 ° DS and the second-generation Bosch ABS braking system with integration 9ME Complete Riding Mode.
