Ford India Sanand Plant set to be commissioned in 2014
Ford India is building their second manufacturing plant in Gujarat. The new Ford plant will help the company to meet the growing domestic and export demand.
Though the Indian auto industry is in slow mode, Ford India is going full steam ahead with their new plant coming up in Sanand, near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. The company has stated that the upcoming plant will be ready for commissioning by 2014 while work on the project is in full swing with over 4,000 persons working on the same. The unit will house stamping, body, paint, assembly and engine manufacturing units once complete.
Ford India has invested a total of $2 billion in India, out of which $1 billion has been invested in the Chennai plant and the balance will be invested in Gujarat. The company is also likely to seek for a port terminal in Gujarat to enable export operations to western countries. Once the Sanand plant is fully commissioned, Ford India will have annual installed capacity of producing close to 610,000 engines and 440,000 vehicles. Expansion of dealer networks is also on the cards.
By end of this year, the company hopes to expand their dealer base from 125 to 250 and to 500 by mid decade. Special attention will be paid to rural areas and Tier II and Tier III cities. Ford India has planned on bringing in eight new products by 2015. The global Fiesta was first of these products, while upcoming EcoSport will be manufactured from Ford India Chennai plant.
