Code Y9T, to be manufactured in Maruti Suzuki’s Gurgaon plant, is a product of Suzuki Carry lineage, that kicked off in 1961. Many generations and versions of Carry are sold in various countries with different nameplates. It includes Maruti Versa / Eeco and Omni van as well.
New Maruti LCV for India resembles Suzuki Ravi sold in Pakistan; both load carriers are based on Omni. Suzuki Ravi hosts same petrol engine seen in Maruti 800 & Omni, with marginally higher peak torque. It is unclear if Indian LCV Y9T will see petrol or CNG engine on offer, but will get a 2 cylinder 800cc diesel engine developed by Maruti Suzuki. This diesel mill is also expected to feature in Celerio.
Chief rivals include Tata Ace and Mahindra Maxximo pickups. It will be interesting to learn the sales of Y9T LCV as Maruti is entering this segment for first time in India. Will exceeding reputation of Maruti in passenger vehicle sector help steal long standing loyalists of Tata and Mahindra?
