Michelin recalls 1.3 million tires over tread separation

Michelin North America has announced a recall of over 1.3 million tyres. These LTX M/S tyres were manufactured during the period January 10, 2010 and June 23, 2012 and are of size LT225/75R16 115/112R LRE.

This recall of 1.3 million tyres is being resorted to as the company noted possible tread separation. If this occurs it could lead to several safety concerns which would include rapid air loss and loss of vehicle control which could lead to serious accidents.

Michelin has informed National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of this recall wherein there were several cases of tread belt endurance concerns was observed. These defects were noted through warranty claims, wherein 20 consumer claims required reimbursement for defects in tyre resulting in damage to vehicles. Of the 1.3 million tyres sold, 1.2 million were sold in the US, while the rest made their way to Canada and Mexico. These tyres are used on commercial light trucks, heavy duty vans and small RVs, besides some larger pickup trucks.

Michelin will be contacting all owners of these defective tyres and replacements will commence from 6th January 2014. Michelin dealers have been notified to ensure quick and free replacements without much inconvenience to customers. (source)
