These tyres for the Sukhois from MRF are called Aeromuscle. For IAF, Switching over to indigenous tyres will bring to an end escalating costs and non availability concerns. These tyres are 30% cheaper than imported ones and have already received clearance from military airworthiness officials.
MRF Tyres will be producing these tyres from their Medak, plant in Hyderabad and will seen the incorporation of various compounds in its make up. These tyres are capable of handling extreme conditions faced by the Sukhoi 30 on landing at a speed of 420 kmph.
MRF agreed to conduct all design, development and quality tests at their own costs and event took tyres to Chennai for a dynamometer test on three occasions, thus incurring an expenditure of INR 10 crores. This dynamometer test simulates the entire sequence of taxi, take off, landing and braking loads on the tyres while the tyres were also sent to IAF bases in Bareilly, Jodhpur and Leh. Final clearance was received in 2012 and MRF has to date delivered 350 tyres with the balance being under production at the Medak plant.
Noting the success of Aeromuscle tyres, IAF has also approached MRF with a mandate for designing the nose wheel tyres for Sukhois. In this regard, fitment trials are over and the tyres are on their way to China for dynamometer tests after which they will be sent to Bangalore for clearance from the Center of Military Airworthiness and Certification.
