After phasing out Datsun back in 1986, Nissan Motors revived their brand Datsun last month. Nissan now plans to use Datsun brand in countries like India, Indonesia and Russia. Under Datsun, Nissan is now planning to launch a small car in the Indian auto industry which will compete with Maruti Suzuki Alto and Hyundai Eon.

Nissan Datsun small car is expected to be priced a little over 2 lacs for the base model while the top end variant will cost you at the most Rs 4 lacs. Mr Takayuki Ishida, MD & CEO, Nissan India, said that Nissan wants to produce cars which can attract mass buyers. This is only possible when they manufacture a small car, especially in India.

Mr Ishida said, “The Datsun cars will be launched around the second half of 2014, and we are targeting to showcase them at the Delhi Auto Expo at the beginning of the year. The pricing will be between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 4 lakh. This is the only way we can ensure that the cars are produced at a competitive price. While the development is being done by Nissan, we are seeking a lot of support from companies outside our fold for access to technology and keeping costs low. R&D in India is very competitive and the development of the vehicles will be done in Chennai, apart from Japan. While the platform development work will not happen at Chennai, some parts of the interiors and the exteriors will be done in India.”

Datsun was first launched in 1931 by DAT Motors. In 1933, Nissan Motors tookover Datsun, then known as Datson. Datsun was known for manufacturing fast cars of 60′s, especially Datsun Sports, also known as Datsun Fairlady.
